Tempe Lands is the site of the former Tempe garbage tip, on the western side of Alexandra Canal, not far from the airport runway 16R landing lights.

Marrickville Council has a design study already underway, for a cycleway along the canal between Tempe Reserve and Canal Road. North of Canal Road is the responsibility of the City of Sydney Council.

One concern in this area is how Sydney Water's Desalination Plant pipeline will affect the proposed cycleway. The pipeline route currently preferred by Sydney Water has the desal pipe running beside the canal, between Tempe Reserve and the airport landing lights. The pipe is to be around 2 metres in diameter (taller than most people), and it is proposed the pipe will run above ground through this area.

At the very least, the massive desal pipe will be a visual eyesore towering over the cycleway. At worst, it will restrict the amount of space available to the cycleway, and inhibit the space Marrickville Council has available for embellishments such as trees, benches and other amenities. Negotiations are continuing between Marrickville Council and Sydney Water.
